We placed the cat purposely in front of a dark area — yet we also felt it important to keep some detail in the trees — so that she gives a strong contrast with her white fur.
There is a natural vignetting and framing, via the thick mass of cypress trees. When we saw the golden light piercing through, we knew this had to be the point of interest for the picture. The glowing light gives an otherwise scary and cold environment a sense of warmth. The light could represent hope, or a way to a better life. It builds a natural walkway in the foreground, and it is up to the subject to decide which way to follow.
The cat’s fierce expression can imply multiple things depending on the viewer’s perception. For us, since we know the cat’s personality — it implies will and determination to find her way out of this haunting area. Her pose shows that she could be moving around, towards the light.
For others though, it could easily make the cat seem like a mythical beast lurking through the area; trying to escape the light and disappear into darkness.
It was a very challenging photo to edit —trying to keep all the different color tones balanced and in harmony with each other.
